Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature;
the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.
2 Corinthians 5:17
When we believe in Jesus Christ as our God and Savior from the hell we deserve, we become born again. The Bible tells us that we are a new creature (2 Cor. 5:17); we have been indwelt and sealed by God’s Holy Spirit who is our helper in our Christian walk and has been promised to be with us forever (Eph. 1:13; 4:30; Jn. 14:16-17). He is given to us to guide us into all truth, empower us to lay aside old sinful habits and put on new righteous ones, and to boldly witness His glorious gospel to a lost and dying world (Jn. 16:13; Eph. 4:1; Acts 1:8). Just as we have been saved from hell by believing in God’s saving promises in Christ, we are to continue exercising faith in God’s promises for victory over sin (Col. 1:22-23; 2:6; Heb. 12:2). This ongoing exercise of faith is fundamental to our growth in grace so that we might please our Heavenly Father and our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. It is His will that we grow in the knowledge of Him and bear fruit in every good work proving to be His disciples as we abide in His word, walking in a manner worthy of our calling (Jn. 15:1-11; Eph. 4:1; Col. 1:10).
We have been crucified with Christ, died with Christ, buried with Christ, raised with Christ, and seated in heavenly places in Christ Jesus (Rom. 6:1-6; Eph. 2:5-6). Our death with Christ was a death to sin, and our being raised with Christ is a resurrection to the new life of righteousness (Rom. 6:7-13). And since we have already been seated in heavenly places we are to keep seeking the things that are above and not the things that are on earth (Col. 3:1-2; 2 Cor. 4:18; 1 Pet. 1:24-25). It is our privilege to walk in this new life. We should be able to say, as Paul said, “It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh (body) I live by faith in the Son of God” (Gal. 5:20), and “For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain” (Phil. 1:21). And when our life on earth is done, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith” (2 Tim. 4:7-8).
It is our responsibility as children of God to walk by the Spirit so that we will not carry out the desires of the flesh, and be useful vessels for God’s service (Gal. 5:16; 2 Tim. 2:19-21). God will not change us apart from our will. We must choose to submit and obey Him, by faith, knowing He will supply the power to be victorious (2 Cor. 2:12). As an act of our will we must choose to flee from sin and pursue righteousness (1 Cor. 6:18; 1 Tim. 6:11; 2 Tim. 2:22). We must choose to lay aside the old self of sin and selfishness, renew our mind with His word, and put on the new self of righteousness and sacrifice (Eph. 4:17-32; Col. 3:1-16). We must resist the devil and draw near to God (Ja. 4:7-8). We must bring every thought captive (confessing every sinful thought) to the obedience of Christ (2 Cor. 10:5). It is our duty to put on the full armor of God and fight the good fight of faith (Eph. 6:10-18; 1 Tim. 6:12; 2 Tim. 4:7). When we step out in faith to obey and do God’s will His Spirit will enable and empower us with great strength in the inner man (Phil. 4:13; Eph. 3:16). We are to show our faith by our works and prove ourselves doers of the word, not just hearers (Jam. 1:22, 25; 2:18-26). The willingness to obey, the exercise of faith, and the power of God are the combination that guarantees victory in the Christian life.
The following words from God are for our encouragement, exhortation, motivation, conviction, strength, perseverance, and power to live the victorious new life in Christ Jesus. When we believe God’s words and act upon them there is no obstacle that can stand in our way that is too great to overcome (Matt. 7:24-27; 2 Pet. 1:3-8). Greater is He who is in us than he who is in the world (1 Jn. 4:4).
